Emily Merritt’s video has been chosen to receive TPHA’s Student Video Challenge Award for 2020.
Emily Merritt is a sophomore at the University of Tennessee Knoxville majoring in microbiology with a minor in public health. Emily has a passion for infectious diseases and plans on pursuing a degree in epidemiology following her undergraduate degree. Emily chose Hepatitis A as her video topic due to the recent outbreaks of the disease seen across Tennessee and wanted to make the public aware of and more educated about the disease. In her free time, Emily enjoys serving at Cruze Farm Dairy and spending time outside hiking or rock climbing.
Emily’s video was completed as an assignment during spring 2020 for the Public Health 201: Introduction to Public Health course at the University of Tennessee. This course covers aspects of public health including discussion of contemporary and controversial health issues. The video assignment is a creative, investigative project where students research a pressing public health issue of their choice using an evidence-base public health approach and apply health communication strategies to reach a specific audience.
